The NVSSAR Secretary/Treasurer reported that all 2008 annual reports were submitted on time; that all payments for the year had been made, including those to the National Society of the SAR (NSSAR) and to the two Nevada Chapters; and that there were no outstanding debts. As of May 1st, the NVSSAR’s bank balance stood at $1,133 and the balance in the Jones Trust stood at $15,486. In addition, the fund established by Dr. Orr for the support of the Knight Essay Contest stood at $1,000,

Thanks to those Compatriots who have supported the Jones Trust, we are able to award three (3) scholarship grants to deserving college students in 2008. To help increase the balances in the Jones Trust and the Signers Chapter’s Schick Trust account and thereby increase the numbers and amounts of the scholarships that can be awarded from these Trusts, all Compatriots are encouraged to send their tax deductible donations to either (or both) of these trust funds. For additional information, contact NVSSAR Secretary Ben Allen.

It’s with regret that we must report the passing of three (3) NVSSAR Compatriots since the 2008 annual meeting. Compatriots Bruce Kenney, Gerald McHale and John McQuatters will be sorely missed.

As of January 1, 2009, membership in the NVSSAR stood at 141; 55 in the Northern Chapter and 86 in the Signers Chapter. This is an increase of 7 members over the 134 members in the NVSSAR at the beginning of 2008. The NVSSAR continues to set records each year for total number of members on its roster.

Both the Northern and Signers Chapters proudly support the state’s ROTC programs and, again in 2009, medals were presented to the outstanding ROTC program participants in the state’s high schools and universities.

Fred Boughton is to be commended and thanked for his excellent work as Registrar for the NVSSAR.

Also to be cited and thanked is William Schmidt for his exemplary and creative work in maintaining the websites for the NVSSAR and for both of the Nevada chapters. All Compatriots are encouraged to visit these informational websites on a regular basis; the addresses for which follow:

    For the Northern Chapter       sar.annetta.com/north.html

Even though the committee worked diligently to encourage participation, only two entries for the Knight Essay Contest were received from high school students in the State of Nevada and no awards were presented in 2009. Rev. Perry and the members of the 2009 Essay Committee were thanked for their efforts on the contest.

At the annual meeting, Compatriot Wesley Kerr, his wife, DarJan, and son, Compatriot Keagan Kerr, from Elko, Nevada presented a copy of the Kerr Family History to the NVSSAR which will be placed in the NSSAR library in Louisville, Kentucky. Our sincere thanks to the Kerr family for this special gift.

The NVSSAR was pleased to present the Nevada Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NVSDAR) with a check for $100 to help support their exemplary work in the state and their continued support of the NVSSAR.

The NVSSAR has purchased two SAR Patriots Books which are to be placed in the Family History Centers in Reno and Las Vegas.

The NVSSAR sincerely thanks those good Compatriots who donated generously to the NVSSAR’s operating fund in 2008. Your donations help to support our continuing projects and is sincerely appreciated.

The initial chapter of the SAR in Nevada was chartered in Reno in February 1910. Accordingly, at the 2010 annual meeting (which is tentatively scheduled to be held at the Ormsby House in Carson City on March 12, 2010), it’s appropriate that we celebrate the 100th anniversary of this event and recognize those compatriots who were instrumental in establishing an SAR presence in Nevada. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for the celebration.

Following adjournment of the annual meeting of the NVSSAR, all of those in attendance were invited to enjoy the hospitality of the NVSDAR at their annual conference banquet. It was enjoyed by all of those who attended.

Respectfully submitted,
